Challenge

Cheesecake Energy approached Glacier Energy to supply heat exchangers for their “eTanker” project, the worlds greenest energy storage technology. The scope of work involved the full design, fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing and supply of bespoke hairpin-style shell and ‘U’ tube heat exchangers.

The energy storage technology, eTanker lowers the cost of medium to long-duration energy storage and turns renewable energy sources like wind and solar into reliable, on-demand power. Thermal and compressed air energy storage is used to achieve costs that are 30-40% lower than that of the cheapest batteries currently available.

Cheesecake Energy

Solutions

Glacier Energy designed and manufactured 3 bespoke hairpin-style shell and ‘U’ heat exchangers for the eTanker project. The team designed and manufactured each heat exchanger using stainless-steel and in line with.

The stainless-steel heat exchangers have a 25-life span and were designed to ASME VII Div. I&ll & PED standards.

Benefits

  • As a result of the team’s extensive design and manufacturing capabilities, the innovative heat exchangers were produced in line with Cheesecake Energy’s requirements.
  • Cheesecake Energy said that Glacier Energy is capable of providing 100s, 1,000s and even 10,000s of similar units as production of the eTanker is set to be ramped up.
  • Cheesecake Energy now have efficient heat exchangers for their energy storage project and due to the success of this scope, further collaborations are taking place on more thermal storage technologies as we move closer to the net zero target.
